In May of 2016, after seeing the drama of the refugees arriving on the island of Lesbos in Greece, I felt that I could help supporting the rescue teams, who were experiencing post-trauma and burn out effects, sending to them flower essences.
In September of 2016 I left Barcelona as an independent volunteer, in my old Panda, loaded with more than 800 pairs of donated prescription glasses and 30 kgs of flower essences, crossing Italy and Greece until arriving at the island of Lesbos.
The idea of establishing “Light to your Eyes” project offering prescription glasses for all those refugees who had lost their glasses in the journey fleeing the war and conflicts and crossing the dangerous Aegean Sea seemed to me very essential. And that’s how I started collecting glasses between friends and opticians.
Today, two years later, we provide ophthalmology assistance in our clinic at Moria refugee camp. Dr. Marselos, a Greek ophthalmologist, in his private clinic, help us with the project offering visits for the most serious and urgent cases.
We have also established Light Without Borders as an NGO and thus be able to cover more possibilities of action within the camps.
The harsh winter arrives to Lesvos … the cold, the rain and the wind… and more than 3000 children living in the Moria refugee camp do not even have a pair of socks to warm their feet, shoes, or warm clothing. We need to take an action in order to help them!
During these weeks we have created a campaign to collect winter clothes from newborn babies up to 12 year olds in order to help to warm their vulnerable little bodies and endure the harsh winter for those who are living in summer tents.
The despair is so high, mixed with the lack of hope living under terrible conditions.
Seeing them in this conditions, without proper shoes, with no socks, falling sick every day really ..breaks my heart.
The solidarity called has been overwhelming and we have hundreds of boxes ready to be sent to Lesbos from all over Spain. The transport company that was going to take care of the expenses, in the last minute, has backed off.
While we were looking for the way to send all the humanitarian aid we haven´t stopped and with your generosity with small donations we have purchased hundreds of pairs of socks … and they were gone in just a few hours !!
Your donations will help us to achieve the Sock Project mission, with the transport from Spain to Lesvos.
All these warm clothes, footwear, solidarity crutches, glasses and frames, toys, school supplies, milk powder, baby bottles, basic medicines, will make this cold winter more bearable for all these little ones in the camp of Moria, Lesvos.
Luz Carmona, the founder of the small Spanish NGO Light Without Borders, will coordinate and manage personally, with LWB team, to distribute all your precious help among all this children and vulnerable people.
We have several obstacles that we have been avoiding,…after waiting several weeks for the answer of the transport Seur Foundation ( in charge of collecting the boxes within Spain ) told us that due to the Black Friday and Christmas complicates the pick up humanitarian aid making impossible and not being able to for free pick ups until mid-January. Too late for these little ones who could not withstand the harsh winter without clothes and shoes.
Eventually Seur Foundation, knowing the emergency has offered us to pick up the humanitarian aid boxes at reduced rate. The agreement is done and in the next few days the boxes pick up will start.
This adds an additional cost in the already expensive transport from Barcelona-Athens-Lesvos
