Results of the Athens Clinic at MSF (December 2024)

We are pleased to share the successful outcome of our recent expedition in Athens, made possible through your unwavering support. Thanks to our collaboration, we were able to attend to 572 patients from 50 different nationalities, providing essential optical services and referrals for those in need.

On November 26, Light Without Borders (Marina Martín and Luz Carmona) were honored to speak at the Complutense University of Madrid, Faculty of Optics and Optometry. They shared moving stories from their work supporting refugees in Greece, raising awareness among students and professors about the hardships in refugee camps.
With deep gratitude, we thank Gema Bartolomé, Marisa Galdón (representing the College of Opticians), and Professors Antona and Ana María Barrio for their warm reception and support in fostering this collaboration.
This event also introduced our volunteer program for optometrists and ophthalmologists to join future expeditions. We are also proud to announce a recently established cooperation agreement with the Complutense University of Madrid, which will strengthen our shared mission to provide essential eye care to the most vulnerable.
It’s inspiring to see the potential of these future professionals to bring light to those most in need. Together, their expertise and compassion will be the vision of hope for so many.

We had the invaluable assistance of 7 volunteers, including 3 ophthalmologists and 4 optometrists. They were joined by 6 interpreters, ensuring smooth communication with the patients.

Patient Nationalities: Patients came from a wide range of countries, including Ukraine, Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Cameroon, Egypt, Tunisia, Albania, Palestine, Lebanon, Guinea, and many others.

Additionally, we thank the local organizations that provided essential referrals for the refugees and migrants, and the tireless efforts of our volunteers who contributed both in person and through their valuable language skills.

A special thank you goes to our project coordinator , Salome, who worked tirelessly to manage the referrals from various organizations and coordinate the appointments for our patients.
