Operación Calcetín
The Sock Project
Keeping small feet warm. Winter 2018 – 2019
Winter 2018. The harsh winter arrives in Lesvos … the cold, the wind, the rain… the wettest winter in a century… and more than 3000 children living in the Moria refugee camp do not even have a pair of socks to warm their feet, shoes, or warm clothing. The conditions were terrible.
Seeing these conditions – children without proper shoes, with no socks, falling sick every day – really … it breaks my heart. There was a sense of despair and lack of hope everywhere.
We needed to take action to help them!
We started Operation Calcetin, an online campaign to collect winter clothes for new born babies up to 12-year olds to help warm their vulnerable little bodies and endure the harsh winter.
The solidarity and response was overwhelming, and we had hundreds of boxes ready to be sent to Lesvos from all over Spain.
We urgently needed and raised through a GoFundme campaign more than €4600 to pay for the transport of a container of the clothes from Spain to the island of Lesvos.
Generous assistance with the transport of the container came also from Fundación SEUR, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the most disadvantaged children, especially through logistics (transportation).
