José Maria Vilchez

Ophthalmologist surgeon

I am José Maria Vilchez, I am an ophthalmologist and surgeon and I have been working at the Hospital de Alcalá la Real in Granada for the last 15 years. I have been a volunteer with Light Without Borders since 2018 and I have had the privilege of collaborating with Luz Carmona in several expeditions, first in Lesbos, in the Moria camp, and then in Athens and surrounding camps. The last expedition was in Thessaloniki, and in refugee camps in remote areas on the border with Bulgaria, in the north of Greece. I would like to emphasise the importance of the humanisation of a project, very small at the beginning and growing in size. The warmth in the welcome and the focus on dignifying each person, helping in the care of the vision. Thanks to LWB for maintaining these unwavering principles in helping the most fragile who come to Europe in search of refuge.
